Before you hire
The mistake to avoid is cement on a wall built for lime. Cement render on clay lump, or hard cement mortar in a flint wall, traps the moisture the wall was built to let out, and the damage builds up behind the surface where you cannot see it. Our guide to lime render explains why. Ask any firm these questions before you take it on.
- Have you worked on this material before, whether clay lump, lime or flint, and can I see a nearby job that is at least three years old?
- Which lime will you use, and why? A good answer names a type, such as non-hydraulic, NHL 2, NHL 3.5 or hot-mixed, and gives a reason for it.
- How will you keep the wall breathable?
If the answers are vague, ask another firm.
Search the registers yourself
The table holds only the firms we could check against a live website, a trade register or a trade-listing profile, and many other trades work on Norfolk buildings. These registers and bodies cover more of them.
- The East Anglia Master Thatchers Association (EAMTA) covers Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Hertfordshire and admits members only after assessing their work. Its directory is at eamta.co.uk/find-a-thatcher.
- The National Society of Master Thatchers (NSMT) has members across the UK, and every member’s work has been inspected by other thatchers. Search it at nsmtltd.co.uk/find-a-thatcher.
- The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) publishes no contractor list, but its free technical advice line on 020 7456 0916 (Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 12:30pm) can suggest the names of professionals and contractors.
- The Building Limes Forum is the body for people who work with building lime: buildinglimesforum.org.uk.
- Heritage Crafts runs a makers directory and a craft map at heritagecrafts.org.uk. Its Red List of Endangered Crafts classes flintwork in buildings as endangered.
- The AABC Register lists Architects Accredited in Building Conservation and can be searched by region at aabc-register.co.uk.
- The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) has an East Anglia branch: ihbc.org.uk.
- EARTHA, the East Anglia earth buildings group, deals with clay lump and other earth walls: eartha.org.uk.
For work on a listed building, or on a structure listed because it stands within a listed building’s curtilage, speak to the district council’s conservation officer before you ask for quotes. North Norfolk, Broadland, Norwich, South Norfolk, King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, Great Yarmouth and Breckland each employ at least one. They do not recommend contractors. How this list is compiled
We chose these firms and checked each entry against the firm’s own website or the register of the body named. Two firms have no website of their own, and their entries were checked against their MyBuilder or BookaBuilder profile instead. Phone numbers and emails are copied from the firm’s own contact page or that profile; where a firm publishes only an enquiry form, the entry says so. A trade-body membership is listed only where we could confirm it. Most of the firms are based in Norfolk. Several of the lime plasterers are based in Suffolk, Cambridgeshire or Essex, and the Area column shows where each firm is, so check that it will travel to you. Before you sign anything, check a limited company’s status on Companies House, ask for three recent local jobs on similar buildings, and get at least two other quotes against the same written specification.
