Best Private and Independent Schools in Norfolk: A Parent’s Guide for 2026
Independent ranking of Norfolk's best private schools for 2026. Per-school detail on Norwich School, Gresham's, Langley, Town Close and 6 more, with fees comparison chart, picks-by-family-priority matrix, VAT-impact outlook and 4-question FAQ.
Norfolk has a strong independent school sector covering everything from small village prep schools to major boarding institutions with centuries of history. This guide covers the schools parents search for most, with honest detail on fees, inspection ratings, what each school is actually like, and which one might suit your family.
Update, 10 June 2026: Thetford Grammar School announced on 28 April 2026 that it will close on 31 August 2026, citing the VAT change on fees and rising costs. Its entry below covers what that means for families in south-west Norfolk.
Quick answers for parents
Are there single-sex private schools in Norfolk?
Yes, one. Norwich High School for Girls (part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, ages 3 to 18, day only) is Norfolk’s only fully single-sex independent school, and every other independent in this guide teaches girls and boys together at every stage. The historically boys-only schools, including Norwich School, are now co-educational throughout.
Which Norfolk private school has the best academic results?
Norfolk’s independent schools do not publish into a single county league table, so the answer depends on the metric chosen. Norwich School reports the strongest senior-year academic record among co-educational options, with consistent Oxbridge progression. Norwich High School for Girls publishes 63 percent of GCSE grades at 9 to 7 and 84 percent of A-levels at A* to B for 2024-25. Gresham’s at Holt leads on breadth across boarding, outdoor education and the arts, rather than on any single academic measure.
How much do Norfolk private school fees cost in 2025-26?
Senior-year day fees at the schools surveyed here run from around £10,000 at the most affordable prep top-year up to £35,010 at Gresham’s, all inclusive of the 20 percent VAT applied to independent school fees since January 2025. Norwich School, the most-searched single school in the county, charges £24,426 for senior day places. Full boarding adds a further £15,000 to £20,000 on top of the day fee. Prep school day fees in Norfolk sit roughly between £10,000 at the most affordable end and £28,000 at the top-fee prep schools, depending on the school’s age range and facilities. Each school publishes its own current rates, and families should confirm fees with the school directly before budgeting for a move.
Are there private schools in West and North Norfolk?
Yes, in both. Glebe House at Hunstanton (prep, ages 0 to 13, day with weekly boarding) is West Norfolk’s only mainstream independent school. North Norfolk has two: Gresham’s at Holt (full 2 to 18, day and boarding) and Beeston Hall at West Runton (prep, 4 to 13, day with boarding from Year 4). Families across the rest of the county commute toward Norwich, where the majority of Norfolk’s independent provision sits within a five-mile radius of the city centre.
We’re moving to Norfolk. Which private schools should we consider first?
Start with location and stage of education, not league tables, because Norfolk’s geography turns most broad shortlists into one realistic school once the school run is plotted on a map. Prep age with a Norwich-area home points to Town Close or Notre Dame Prep; senior co-education with a Norwich home points to Norwich School; a girls-only senior place is Norwich High School for Girls; and a north-coast home or a need for full boarding is Gresham’s. Drive time from the town a family actually wants to live in matters more than rank order, especially across rural Norfolk where the journey can stretch past forty-five minutes each way.
Is there a state alternative to private boarding in Norfolk?
Yes. Wymondham College (Ofsted Outstanding, ages 4 to 18) is a state boarding school: day places are free, and weekly boarding fees sit far below independent boarding rates, at around £5,250 per term in 2026. The catch is heavy oversubscription; apply early at every entry point.
Are Norfolk private schools good value compared with the rest of the UK?
Generally yes. Norfolk fees run below London, the Home Counties and the Oxford and Cambridge orbit. Notre Dame at £10,002 a year and Norwich Steiner at £14,200 are well under the national independent average, and even Norwich School at £24,426 is moderate by national standards. The exception is boarding at Gresham’s, which at £50,160 a year is priced like the big national boarding names.
What are the best boarding schools in Norfolk?
For full boarding the realistic list is Gresham’s at Holt, the most prestigious and the most expensive, and Langley School outside Loddon, mid-range with strong sport. Beeston Hall at West Runton is the prep-age standout. Wymondham College offers state boarding at a fraction of independent fees but is heavily oversubscribed. Thetford Grammar, previously the budget boarding option, closes in August 2026.
Norfolk Independent Schools at a Glance
Annual day-fee comparison (top year, inclusive of VAT)
Top-year annual day-fees, inclusive of VAT, as currently published by each school (verified May 2026). 2025/26 figures throughout, except Langley Senior and Glebe House, which have published 2026/27 figures only, and Town Close, which is shown at the actual amount paid in 2025/26 under the school’s 75 percent / 50 percent VAT-absorption taper. Boarding fees add roughly £15,000 to £20,000 on top of the day fee. Source: each school’s published fees page.
Norfolk has around a dozen independent schools spread across the county. Most are concentrated in and around Norwich, but there are notable options in Holt, Hunstanton, Thetford, and Loddon. Annual fees range from around 10,000 at the most affordable prep schools to over 35,000 for senior day places at Gresham’s, with boarding adding significantly more. Since January 2025, VAT at 20 percent applies to independent school fees. All figures throughout this page are inclusive of VAT. Town Close is currently absorbing part of the VAT increase via a published taper (75 percent absorbed in 2025, 50 percent in 2026, 25 percent in 2027), so its 2025/26 figure shown above is the amount families actually pay rather than the published list price.
1. Norwich School
Location: Norwich city centre (The Close, NR1)
Ages: 4 to 18
Type: Co-educational day school
Approximate annual fees: 24,426 (senior years, 2025/26 inc VAT)
Inspection: ISI Excellent in all areas
Founded in 1096 and refounded by Edward VI in 1547, Norwich School sits next to Norwich Cathedral and is the strongest academic school in the county. It regularly sends pupils to Oxbridge and top Russell Group universities. Alumni include Lord Nelson. The Lower School takes pupils from age 4, and the Senior School from 11. This is the school most Norwich families aspire to if academic rigour is the priority. It is day only, so there is no boarding option, but the central Norwich location makes it accessible from most parts of the city and surrounding suburbs like Thorpe St Andrew, Sprowston, and Costessey.
2. Gresham’s School, Holt
Location: Holt, North Norfolk (200-acre campus)
Ages: 2 to 18
Type: Co-educational day and boarding
Approximate annual fees: 35,010 (senior day); 50,160 (senior boarding) (2025/26 inc VAT)
Inspection: ISI Excellent in all 9 categories
Gresham’s is Norfolk’s premier boarding school and one of the best-known independent schools in East Anglia. Set on a 200-acre campus just four miles from the North Norfolk coast, it offers something no city school can match for outdoor education and space. The school has an All-Steinway music school with a 140-seat recital hall, a 314-seat theatre named after former pupil W.H. Auden, and playing fields that stretch across multiple pitches. Notable alumni include Benjamin Britten, Olivia Colman, and international rugby players Tom and Ben Youngs. Gresham’s takes pupils from nursery age through to sixth form, with boarding available from the prep school years. It is the obvious choice for families in North Norfolk or those specifically seeking a full boarding experience.
3. Norwich High School for Girls (GDST)
Location: Norwich (Newmarket Road, NR2)
Ages: 3 to 18 (girls only)
Type: Day school
Approximate annual fees: 20,778 (senior years, 2025/26 inc VAT; 2026/27 figure is 21,816)
Inspection: ISI routine inspection 2024
Norwich High is Norfolk’s only single-sex independent school and part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, the UK’s leading network of independent girls’ schools. GCSE results are strong, with 63% of grades at 9 to 7, and A-level results show 84% at A* to B, putting it in the top 5% nationally. The school has a reputation for STEM and regularly secures Oxbridge places. It is a day school only, so suits Norwich-based families. If you are specifically looking for a girls-only environment with a strong academic track record, this is the main option in Norfolk.
4. Langley School, Loddon
Location: Senior School at Loddon; Prep School at Taverham
Ages: 6 months to 18
Type: Co-educational day and boarding
Approximate annual fees: 24,372 (senior day, from September 2026, inc VAT); full boarding from 46,782
Inspection: ISI routine inspection 2024; Prep has six consecutive outstanding reports
Langley operates across two sites. The prep school (Langley Preparatory School at Taverham Hall) sits in Taverham near Norwich, while the senior school is in Loddon, South Norfolk. The senior campus is set in grounds originally laid out by Capability Brown, centred on a Palladian hall built in 1737. Langley is distinctive for its Football Academy, led by former Premier League striker Grant Holt, and its Polo Academy. It also holds a Gold Artsmark Award for creative arts. Boarding is available at the senior school with separate boys’ and girls’ houses. Langley is a good mid-range option for families who want boarding without the price tag of Gresham’s.
5. Town Close School, Norwich
Location: Norwich (Ipswich Road, NR2)
Ages: 3 to 13
Type: Co-educational day school (prep only)
Approximate annual fees: 19,338 (Year 3-8, actual 2025/26 paid under the school’s 75 percent / 50 percent VAT-absorption taper; published list price 21,420 inc VAT)
Inspection: ISI Excellent in every category
Town Close is widely regarded as Norwich’s leading prep school. Set across 17 acres near the city centre, it prepares pupils for entry to senior schools including Norwich School, Gresham’s, and nationally to Eton, Harrow, and Oundle. The ISI inspection gave it the highest possible grading in every single category, which places it among a small number of schools nationally at that level. Town Close is a prep school only (up to age 13), so parents need to plan for a senior school transition. If preparing a child for a top senior school is the goal, Town Close is the standard bearer in Norfolk.
6. Beeston Hall School, West Runton
Location: West Runton, near Cromer (35-acre campus)
Ages: 4 to 13
Type: Co-educational day and boarding (boarding from Year 4)
Approximate annual fees: 28,410 (top prep day, Year 4-8); full boarding 37,920 (2025/26 inc VAT)
Inspection: ISI routine inspection 2024
Beeston Hall is East Anglia’s largest boarding prep school, with around 175 pupils on a 35-acre campus just 500 metres from the North Norfolk coast. The school sits adjacent to 700 acres of National Trust woodland, which it uses extensively for outdoor education. Boarding is available from Year 4 and the school has a family-like atmosphere rather than the more institutional feel of larger boarding schools. It has an excellent track record of winning scholarships to top senior schools. Beeston Hall suits families in the Cromer and Sheringham area or those seeking a prep school with character and coastal living.
7. Thetford Grammar School
Location: Thetford
Ages: 3 to 18
Type: Co-educational day and boarding
Approximate annual fees: 20,115 (senior day, Years 7-13, from September 2025, inc VAT)
Inspection: ISI routine inspection 2023
Status: Closing 31 August 2026 (announced 28 April 2026)
Thetford Grammar may be the oldest school in England, with origins possibly dating to AD 631 and documented history from 1114. Thomas Paine, author of Rights of Man, was a pupil here. Today it is one of Norfolk’s most affordable independent schools, with senior day fees around £20,115 per year compared with £24,426 at Norwich School. The school is small, which means very personal attention, and it has an international boarding community. It runs all the way from pre-prep to sixth form. Thetford Grammar will not reopen in September 2026. The school announced its closure on 28 April 2026, citing the cumulative weight of VAT on fees, the loss of business rates relief and rising staff costs; its roll had fallen from 221 pupils in 2017 to 179 by December 2025. Displaced families have been pointed towards Finborough School near Stowmarket, about 20 miles south over the Suffolk border. For south-west Norfolk that leaves Wymondham College for state boarding and the Norwich day schools up the A11 as the realistic alternatives.
8. Glebe House School, Hunstanton
Location: Hunstanton, West Norfolk
Ages: 6 months to 13
Type: Co-educational day and weekly boarding
Approximate annual fees: 22,301 (top prep year, Snr Prep VI-VIII, from September 2026, inc VAT)
Inspection: ISI Excellent; Nursery rated Outstanding
Glebe House is the only independent school in West Norfolk, which makes it the default choice for families in the Hunstanton, Downham Market, and King’s Lynn area who want private education without a long commute. Set on the coast near the RSPB Snettisham reserve and the Sandringham Estate, it has a 25-metre indoor pool, astroturf, tennis courts, and a forest school programme. It is a prep school (up to 13), so pupils typically move on to Gresham’s or other boarding schools for senior years. Weekly boarding is available, which suits working parents who want more than a standard day school but not full boarding.
9. Notre Dame Preparatory School, Norwich
Location: Norwich (Dereham Road, NR2)
Ages: 2 to 11
Type: Co-educational day school (Catholic ethos, all faiths welcome)
Approximate annual fees: 10,002 (top prep year, 2025/26 inc VAT)
Inspection: ISI Excellent
Notre Dame is the most affordable independent school in Norfolk, with annual fees around £10,002 inclusive of VAT. It has a Catholic ethos but welcomes children of all faiths. Crucially, it is non-selective, meaning there is no academic entrance exam, yet results consistently exceed national averages. The school offers up to 20% sibling discount. It only goes to age 11, so parents will need to plan for secondary transition, but as an entry point into independent education it is hard to beat on value. Small class sizes and a community atmosphere are the main draws alongside the low fees.
10. Norwich Steiner School
Location: Norwich (Rouen Road, NR1)
Ages: 3 to 19
Type: Co-educational day school
Approximate annual fees: 14,200 (Upper School annual fee inc VAT, 2025/26)
Inspection: Ofsted Good
Norwich Steiner is Norfolk’s only Waldorf/Steiner school, offering a completely different educational philosophy to every other school on this list. There is no formal testing in the early years, the curriculum is creative and broad, and there is a strong emphasis on arts, crafts, movement, and outdoor learning. It goes all the way to age 19 with A-level equivalent qualifications. The school suits families who are seeking an alternative to conventional independent education and are drawn to the Steiner philosophy. It will not suit every child, but for the right family, it offers something distinctive.
Honourable Mention: Wymondham College (State Boarding)
Wymondham College is not an independent school, but it appears in almost every conversation about Norfolk boarding schools, so it deserves a mention. It is the largest state boarding school in the UK, with over 550 boarders. Tuition is completely free since it is state-funded. Parents only pay for boarding, which is approximately 5,250 per term. Ofsted rated it Outstanding in all 9 categories in October 2023, believed to be a first under the new inspection framework. It sits on an 83-acre campus near Wymondham and takes pupils from age 4 (boarding from age 9). If boarding is what you want but independent school fees are out of reach, Wymondham College is the answer. Entry is competitive.
The nearest private schools, town by town
Near Wymondham and Hethersett
If you are searching for a private school near Wymondham, the realistic options divide between Norwich-based day schools and the South Norfolk independents. None of the schools above sit in Wymondham itself, but several are within a 25 minute drive:
- Wymondham College (state boarding, on the doorstep), the closest option for boarding without independent fees. Ofsted rated Outstanding in all 9 categories, October 2023 (DfE Find an Inspection Report). Tuition free; boarding around 5,250 per term in 2026.
- Norwich School (about 12 miles, day), direct A11 / A47 routes into Norwich, around 25 minutes outside peak. Best academic record in the county.
- Norwich High School for Girls (about 12 miles, day), same drive into Norwich; strongest A-level results among Norfolk independents (84% A*-B in the most recent published outcomes from the GDST network).
- Town Close School (about 11 miles, prep only to age 13), the standard prep feeder for Wymondham families aiming at Norwich School, Gresham’s or top national senior schools.
- Langley Preparatory School at Taverham Hall (about 17 miles via the A47, prep), alternative prep with Football Academy and Polo Academy. Senior school is at Loddon, about 20 miles from Wymondham.
- Langley Senior School, Loddon (about 20 miles, day and boarding), feasible for weekly boarding from Wymondham; full day commute is borderline at 40+ minutes.
Families weighing Wymondham itself as a base for any of the above should also check our Living in Wymondham guide and the broader Norfolk Schools Guide for state options. The default daily commute pattern from Wymondham is south Norwich via Cringleford, which means Norwich High, Town Close and Norwich School all sit on the same drive.
Near Loddon and the Chet valley
Loddon has the shortest private school run in the county. Langley School’s senior campus sits in parkland at Langley Park, about two miles from the village centre, and Chedgrave is a few minutes further. For prep age, most local families use Langley’s own junior provision or Town Close in Norwich, roughly 11 miles up the A146.
East of Norwich: Blofield, Brundall and Acle
None of the broadland villages has an independent school of its own, so the pull is west into Norwich. Norwich School and Norwich High School for Girls are 7 to 12 miles away depending on the village, which works out at 20 to 35 minutes on the A47 in school traffic. Town Close, the city’s main prep, is on Ipswich Road on the south side of Norwich. Some east-of-Norwich families choose Langley School instead, reached via the A47 southern bypass and the A146 in about half an hour.
South of Norwich: Mulbarton and Poringland
From Mulbarton and Swardeston the nearest independent is Town Close on Ipswich Road, under ten minutes by car outside rush hour, with Norwich School another ten minutes into the city centre. Poringland families heading the other way reach Langley School in about twenty minutes on the B1332 and A146. Wymondham College is roughly seven miles west of Mulbarton for the state boarding route.

How to Choose the Right School
Choosing between Norfolk’s independent schools usually comes down to a few practical factors:
- Day or boarding? If boarding is essential, your main options are Gresham’s, Langley, Beeston Hall (prep), and Wymondham College (state). Norwich School, Norwich High, and Town Close are day only.
- Budget. Fees range from £10,002 per year (Notre Dame) to £50,160 for boarding at Gresham’s. Norwich Steiner sits at the affordable end for an all-through school.
- Location. Most independent schools are in Norwich. If you live in West Norfolk, Glebe House is the only local option. North Norfolk has Gresham’s and Beeston Hall. South-west Norfolk loses its only independent option when Thetford Grammar closes in August 2026; after that, Wymondham College and the Norwich schools are the nearest choices.
- Age range. Some schools are prep only (Town Close to 13, Beeston Hall to 13, Notre Dame to 11, Glebe House to 13). If you want one school from 4 to 18, your options are Norwich School, Gresham’s, or Norwich Steiner.
- Philosophy. Norwich Steiner is the outlier with its Waldorf approach. All others follow broadly conventional curricula, though emphasis varies between academic intensity (Norwich School), sport and outdoor life (Gresham’s, Beeston Hall), and all-round development (Langley, Glebe House).

Plan the move and the schooling together
What to watch in 2026
- VAT impact on demand. The 20% VAT applied to independent fees from January 2025 has shifted some demand toward Outstanding-rated state schools and to Wymondham College’s state boarding. Watch September 2026 admissions for whether the shift is sustained or reversing.
- Bursary expansion. Several Norfolk independents are expanding bursary provision in response to the VAT change. Check current bursary eligibility on each school’s website; 2026-27 bursary funds are typically larger than 2024-25 was.
- Fee inflation. Average fee increases for 2026-27 are landing in the 4 to 7 percent band across Norfolk independents (excluding the VAT step). Budget accordingly when projecting full-school costs.
- Wymondham College state boarding capacity. The Outstanding rating and roughly £5,250-per-term boarding fee make Wymondham College the strongest state alternative in the East of England. 2026 admissions competition is sharp; apply early.
